July 31, 2009 - This morning each major news network offers its take on different important economic programs. CNN focuses on the "Cash for Clunkers" program which is reportedly running out of money. I think this program is a great idea on paper, because it gets old, inefficient cars off the road in exchange for new, more efficient cars. However, individuals participating in the program trade-in a car they've most likely had paid off for years and get a new car, with a new monthly car payment in return. Lets hope that lenders aren't making the same mistakes that got us into this recession in the first place.
MSNBC places its focus on two economic issues, healthcare reform and positive economic reports from the second quarter. You would never know watching CNN or Fox News, but MSNBC reports that the recession was eased in the second quarter. I thank MSNBC for reporting good news, it's nice to smile at something other than a human interest story. MSNBC also reports on the spike in fundraising money given to fiscally conservative democrats known as, "Blue Dogs" by the health industry. Is lobbying any different than bribery? In my idealistic dreams I think of a lobbyist as someone who tries to persuade lawmakers using words, facts, figures, just a good sales pitch. It turns out all a successful lobbyist needs is legible handwriting, good enough to fill out checks. If healthcare reform gets turned down, it should be because the majority of lawmakers genuinely disagreed with it, not because the majority of lawmakers were paid to disagree with it.
Finally, the most important breaking news of the day, coming from Fox News. It turns out stimulus money is being used to fund underground pornography. The report cites stimulus money intended for the arts that is being used to fund nude revues and other "inappropriate" art ventures in San Francisco. Chances are those left wingnuts out in San Francisco genuinely consider it art. I'm not going to comment too much on art, because I've never really understood it. All I know about art is that when I'm old and gray, I'm going to throw some paint at a canvas and hope that it makes my family a fortune after I die. In regard to the Fox News story, is this the only thing they could come up with to criticize the stimulus plan? The money was intended to support the arts. Is it up to the government to determine what is and isn't art? Do we really want a government bureaucracy standing between us and our art? Yeah, that is your argument against healthcare reform, just substitute "doctors" for "art". As long as President Obama isn't attending the nude revues in support of the arts, then leave it alone. Sorry to say, I think Fox News is reaching on this one, but that's the news, and this is the News to Me.
