July 30, 2009 - I'm going to do this once to get it off my chest and after today I'll try not to make it my focus. CNN, a news network that used to be my preferred news source is rapidly transforming into the Entertainment News Network (ENN). This morning, over a month after his death, the cover story on CNN's website is titled, "Doctor focus of Jackson inquiry; chef talks about singer's last day." Is this a joke? I get it, he was the King of Pop, and Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, even recognized him as the greatest entertainer that ever lived. Sure, Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer of all time, good for him, I liked his music too, but he is still dead and nothing his chef has to say will change that.
We have a nearly endless number of outlets to get our entertainment news and in this case music news: E, MTV, VH1, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, TMZ, Perez Hilton, and the list goes on. CNN even has an "Entertainment" section on their website. It's way down at the bottom where they keep their less important headlines, including "World" news and "Science and Technology," where you'll find an incredibly boring piece on alternative energy research. I'm not suggesting that CNN shouldn't report the story, but put it where it belongs. Maybe CNN just can't find a viable news lead, so they make this their cover story as a last resort. Yeah, that's it, they didn't have anything more important to report on, well that makes sense. Healthcare reform, Darfur, the economy, North Korea, the housing crisis, Iran, unemployment, alternative energy, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are all issues of minimal importance compared to Michael Jackson's death investigation.
It all makes sense to me now, I guess CNN did report today's most important news story. I'll be back tomorrow, but for now I'm going to go bury my head in a pillow. You may disagree, but It's the News to Me.
