July 29, 2009 - I must concede, the headlines this morning were not too disappointing, but that's positive. Fox News presents an interesting article on NYC Mayor Bloomberg's initiative to get homeless families out of New York in an effort to relieve the homeless services system. NYC is providing one-way airfare to any location in the world to get homeless families out. Didn't Giuliani try this? In a city as large as New York, a large homeless population is inevitable, even if this program is initially successful, the homeless population will come back, ask Rudy. Anyways, good for the homeless, make sure you go somewhere warm and whatever you do, stay out of Detroit, it's just as cold as New York and their government doesn't have enough money to fly you anywhere else.
MSNBC focuses on the new Microsoft, Yahoo Search merger which aims to create a viable competitor for Google. Good luck to Yahoo and Microsoft, maybe this will give another boost to the economy. The economy, what's that? Are we still in an economic crisis? Is it a recession or depression? That's right, how would I know, nobody is talking about it. To provide an update, the Dow Jones Industrial recently surpassed 9,000 points providing another positive indicator that the economy is starting to improve. Hey Wolf, yeah you with the creepy white beard. You loved talking about the economy when you could scare people by comparing a difficult recession to the Great Depression. Now you're so quiet, but that's right, good news doesn't reel in the viewers quite like bad news does. And what would the, "Situation Room," be without a viable crisis to talk about. If they won't talk about it, I will. Clearly there are still a lot of weaknesses in our economy, but new home sales are up significantly and the stock market continues to improve, lets just hope it all continues.
That leaves CNN, even though I already went on a tangent about their longtime anchor, Wolf Blitzer. CNN's cover story centers around Colin Powell's comments on the Gates-Crowley Showdown. OK, Colin Powell is an important figure, whose comments should be respected, listened to and talked about. However, I still don't get it, how did this situation become a national story? I'm sorry, I agree with President Obama, Sgt. Crowley acted stupidly. Notice, I didn't say Sgt. Crowley is stupid, he might be, I don't know him, but he did act stupidly. However, in no way does that mean he was discriminating against Professor Gates because of his race. He may of been, but nobody will ever know exactly why Sgt. Crowley acted the way he did. Still, people rush to conclusions assuming that Professor Gates was profiled. I'm not black, but I know better than to talk-back to a cop. Be quiet, honest and cordial and the chances are good that you will receive that same respect in return. When dealing with the police, no matter your race, they are in the position of power and will show you that if you disrespect them. I know racial discrimination is still an issue in this country and could have played a role in this situation, but it all could have been avoided if either individual had acted with some maturity. NOW...because they both acted stupidly, they get to go drink beer in the White House. That's it! I think I learned my lesson from the news today. I'll be back in the morning, I'm going to try and find a way to drink beer with the president. I may not be right, but It's the News to Me.
