Republican Primary - Who will win?

Who will win the Republican primary?

The likely answer to that question changes week-by-week.  Good old Mitt Romney, beloved time traveller from the 1950's, has been the media's favorite, but the entrance of Rick Perry into the fraucus has increased the likelihood of seeing the second coming of George W.  Hopefully a rapture doesn't accompany this second-coming; although if he's elected, I'll want to be anywhere but Planet Earth.  Not to be forgotten, (even if you wanted to to, she won't let you) is the Bernstein Bear herself, Sarah Palin.  She won't admit that she's running, but she has done more campaigning than the candidates themselves.  Palin even produced her very own documentary film to promote her conservative values, moral fiber and adorable Alaskan accent.  If she's not running, she should consider a job as spokesperson for Iowa and New Hampshire's Tourism Departments.  Finally, the two who finished first and second in the Iowa Straw Poll, history-buff Michele Bachmann and the easily ignorable, Ron Paul.  Michele Bachmann makes Sarah Palin look like a Rhodes Scholar.  Seriously, whoever writes her speeches should stick to Tea Party talking points and remove all historical and/or geographical references.  I understand she is trying to build rapport and earn likability points with the audience, but she would be better off stuffing a corn dog in her mouth to prevent herself from speaking.

So who will win?

The answer:...wait, wait, wait.  I forgot to say anything about Ron Paul.  After all the guy did finish second in the Iowa Straw Poll.  Maybe I overlooked him because the media fails to talk about him at all, he's just a side-show.  I don't agree with him, but at least his views are backed up with true conviction, not something that's fabricated to appease the Tea Party.

OK, back on track, who will win?

The answer:  Whoever does the best job appeasing the Tea Party.  It might be Mitt, it could be Perry, and Sarah Palin could come storming in on the back of a Grizzly to steal the show.  There is just no way to know at this point.

What we know:

We know that whoever wins the Republican primary will come into the general election with their concealed weapons loaded full of the same "No-Tax", "No Big Government" talking points that the Tea Party babies have been jamming down our throats for the last couple of years.  We know that Democrats will counter with their own barbs about, "Not going back to the same failed policies of George W. Bush."  We also know that none of this will solve any of our problems and that this election will give us more of the same ultra-partisan politics that we have seen since the beginning of President Obama's first-term.

What we don't know:

We don't know if the American public will come to their senses and demand moderation and compromise.  At this difficult time in our nation's history we do not need partisanship, extreme policies or any major shifts to the right or the left.  We're in this mess because time-after-time our elected officials have failed to work together.  They have chosen to appease the extreme minority of their bases over the well-being of the majority.

The first step in solving the major challenges that face our nation is to rediscover the middle.  Whether it's President Obama or a GOP candidate, we can only hope that someone starts talking to the base of the Nation as opposed to the base of their party.
